Kilkenny GAA: Mixed results for Danesfort, Barrow Rangers and Muckalee in outside competition

It was a mixed Saturday on the results front for Kilkenny teams in domestic and outside competition with local sports fans spoiled for choice!

Provincial final places were on the line for Danesfort and Barrow Rangers in the AIB Leinster intermediate and junior championships respectively, Muckalee had a date with London opposition in an LGFA All-Ireland junior quarter-final while matches were also played in the under-21 C and D championships locally.

Danesfort proved to be too strong for Commercials (Dublin) in their provincial semi-final. Adrian Burke's team led from start to finish to run out 1-19 to 0-10 winners.

Fionn Mahony was an important feature of the win and the in-form forward bagged his second goal of the provincial championship on 19th minute (1-7 to 0-1) to set his team on the road victory with the Dublin champions unable to pull back a nine point deficit at the interval (1-10 to 0-4).

Meanwhile, Barrow Rangers' dream of winning a first Leinster junior title came to an end in Canon Kearns Park in Castlecomer as Davidstown Courtnacuddy (Wexford) put in a strong away display to advance to the provincial final on a 2-16 to 0-15 scoreline.

After a disappointing opening 15 minutes where the Kilkenny club managed to convert just one point from play and trailed 1-5 to 0-2, the Paulstown-Goresbridge support were given plenty of reason for optimism in the third and fourth quarters as they came marching back with ten of the half's 12 points to lead 0-12 to 1-7 at the break.

Six different scorers found the target for Barrow Rangers in that period. Joe Healy slotted over five points from frees and was also involved in arguably the best score of the purple patch, linking up sharply with Keith Lavin for the latter to score.

However, it proved to be all downhill for the hosts upon the resumption of the second half as the concession of a second goal appeared to open the floodgates. The Wexford men who held a 2-12 to 1-13 advantage by the 40th minute. A Joe Healy free the only white flag raised for Barrow Rangers in that time.

The Kilkenny champions never dropped their heads and a Billy Hanlon shot which crashed off the crossbar did have Davidstown Courtnacuddy supporters sweating on the 46th minute but alas it wasn't to be.

A second yellow card for Keith Flavin meant Barrow Rangers played the final 10 with 14 players as their incredible journey came to an end after ending a 35 year wait for a junior county title just under a month ago.

Meanwhile, Muckalee were too hot for St Kiernan's of London to handled at the GAA Centre of Excellence in Abbottstown as they ran out 3-10 to 0-6 winners.

Goals courtesy of Sian Bolger, Edwina Keane and Eadoin Coady steered the North Kilkenny club to an All-Ireland semi-final where they will play Menlough Skehana of Galway next weekend.

In truth it could have been even more with Helen Murphy pulling off a number of key saves to limit the damage for the visitors.

Elsewhere, goals proved to be king for John Lockes who were crowned under21 D champions with a 3-15 to 0-15 defeat of St Patrick's Ballyragget.

In the under 21 C competition, the Fenians/Blacks & Whites team will join the Shamrocks, Graignamanagh and Lisdowney in the semi-finals after an impressive 1-21 to 2-16 win over Dicksboro.
