Dreelin and Fiacre’s breeze to victory

St Fiacre’s 0-11

St Fiacre’s 0-11

SAINT Fiacre’s made better use of the strong breeze to beat Galmoy/Windgap in their under-14 Roinn C hurling league game in Galmoy on Thursday.

The hosts had the benefit of that breeze in the opening half, but retired level (0-4 each) with their opponents from Graignamanagh/Blacks & Whites at the break.

Galmoy/Windgap had made a good start with Niall Walsh pointing twice, one from a free, in the first five minutes along with a nice point from Oisín Phelan to lead 0-3 to 0-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Jack Carroll opened the St Fiacre’s account from a free when a defender over-carried. Carroll hit his side’s three other points of the half, all from frees also. Another Niall Walsh free, which he won himself, levelled the game at the break.

For the new half St Fiacre’s moved out their full-back Terry Dreelin to midfield. This strongly-built player made a big contribution to the winners’ cause. Centre-back Jordan Brett was also excellent for St Fiacre’s, particularly during that second moiety, while David Doyle also excelled for Galmoy/Windgap when moved to centre-back.

When Conor Grace was fouled in the 31st minute, Niall Walsh pointed. He extended that lead in the 35th minute after being fouled himself.

But St Fiacre’s now had a better shape to their side and Terry Dreelin pointed twice, one from a free, to level matters at 0-6 apiece.

The next ten minutes were scoreless, but well contested. Paddy Nolan and Killian Phelan were doing well for St Fiacre’s while Sean Phelan and Jack Delaney defended well for Galmoy/Windgap.

Joe Dowling shot a point from close range and then Eoin Doyle popped over two very skilful points to extend their lead to three. Brandon Phelan was trying hard now for Galmoy/Windgap at midfield and when Conor Drennan won a 50 metre free, Niall Walsh split the posts.

In the space of five minutes, Conor Grace was barely wide with two successive shots on goal for the hosts. Sensing the danger, and inspired by the tremendous Jordan Brett, St Fiacre’s upped the ante and had two more points from Terry Dreelin (free) and one from sub Mitchell Maher to run out deserving winners.
