Driven Clara put an average showing and defeat the previous week behind them when they bounced back to claim the scalp of championship holders, Ballyhale Shamrocks in the senior hurling league at Thomastown on Friday (1-12 to 1-11).
A seventh minute goal from Ciarán Prendergast got the winners off to a flying start (1-3 to 0-1). At the break they led by 1-8 to 0-6.
Shamrocks conceded the first score after the turn, but they thundered into the game after that, and in the end they were a mite unlucky not to share the spoils. The losers had former hurler of the year, Michael Fennelly carried off the pitch after injuring an ankle near the finish of the game.
The full extent of Fennelly’s injury won’t be known until mid-week, but no bones were broken.
