It was amusing, near farcical at times and especially so at the finish when Oylegate (Wexford) had two men sent off during the closing 10 minutes, but for all the apparent trouble there was nothing unusual going on as Clara (Kilkenny) rompted to an easy win in the Leinster club intermediate hurling final at Nowlan Park yesterday.
It was most unusual to have 11 against 15 in the end, but the numbers game meant little. The simple story was that Clara were by far the better team as they beat Oylegate/Glenbrien of Wexford by 3-20 to 0-5.
The winners kicked off with unanswered points from Keith Hogan (2), James Nolan, Conor Phelan and Liam Ryan during the opening eight minutes. When Austin Murphy cracked home the first goal in the 20th minute the difference was already 1-8 to 0-3.
The game was already over too. By half-time Oylegate were 0-3 to 1-11 behind, and they were a man down.
Three more dismissals followed, all for two yellow cards followed by red. As the ref piled up the bookings, Clara piled up the goals and points with Brian O’Shea (37th and 58th minutes) claiming the big scores.
