As in any sport a team is only as good as the support team behind it. Here are the members of the Kilkenny hurling backroom squad:
Dr Tadhg Crowley (team doctor) - Tadhg is a native of Tralee, Co Kerry. His hobbies include football, golf, hurling and all other sports. He was doctor to the Limerick junior hurling panel in 1996.
After moving to Kilkenny he was involved in the Kilkenny under-21s’ from 1997 to 2001. He has been an integral part of the senior set-up since 2002.
Kevin Curran (physiotherapist) - Kevin has been working in musculoskeletal and sports injuries since 2003. For the past few years he has worked with various GAA clubs before joining the Kilkenny senior panel.
He works full time in physiotherapy with Kilkenny and Sports Rehabilitation Therapists.
John Kearns (physiotherapist) - John has been a Sports Therapist since 2008 and has been with the Kilkenny seniors since 2010. He runs his own clinic in Hotel Kilkenny and in Callan.
John is also interested in marathon running and mountain running.
Neal Byrne (sports rehabilitator) - Neal’s qualification is Sports Rehabilitation BSc (Hons). His hobbies include playing guitar and going to gym. He was previously a member of the Irish Rowing Team and represented Ireland at multiple world Championships and Olympic Games.
He also worked as Development Rowing Coach with Trinity College. Neal currently operates a private Sports Rehabilitation Clinic working with many sports and teams.
Alison Holmes (physiotherapist) - Alison’s qualification is Chartered Physiotherapist, MISCP. Her hobbies include rugby, hockey, badminton, GAA, music.
She graduated from UCD in 2008 and completed a MSc. in physiotherapy in 2009. She has worked with a wide range of sports teams and athletes at club, inter-varsity, inter-county and interprovincial levels before joining the Kilkenny backroom team in 2013.
She currently works part time in the HSE and in her own private practice in Co. Laois.
Noreen Roche (nutritionist) - Noreen is from Inistioge and has been with the Kilkenny senior hurling team as Sports Dietitian since 1998. During that time she has also worked with the IRFU and a number of inter-county football teams.
She is a member of the anti-doping committee of the Irish Sports Council. Noreen has featured as a nutritional expert on a wide range of media including TV. She also lectures in Sports Nutrition. Noreen works full time with Nutricia Medical as Head of Adult Medical Services for UK and Ireland.
Denis ‘Rackard’ Cody (kit manager) - Denis has been part of the Kilkenny back room team for the past 38 years.
In addition to acting as a side-line official at inter-county games, Denis was a senior referee in Kilkenny and has refereed county finals at all levels. His hobbies include coaching camogie and hurling.
In recent years Rackard has been a superb ambassador for Kilkenny as he visited schools and clubs all over Ireland particularly in years when the Liam Mc Carthy Cup rested by the Nore.
