Kilkenny’s Leinster champions were honoured for their achievements with a special celebration.
The teams, who won the under-14 and under-16 Leinster Division 2 titles in 2013, were presented with their medals in the Springhill Court Hotel on Friday. Special guest on the night was Leinster Council chairwoman Marie Hickey. The Laois native, now based in Kilcullen, is a candidate in the forthcoming Ladies Gaelic Football presidential election.
There was a huge turnout of players, parents and grandparents for the occasion. Presentations were also made to all the girls who took part in the development squad programmes at under-13, 15 and 17 levels last year.
The Kilkenny minors begin their Leinster campaign this weekend. They will take on Louth in Castlebellingham on Saturday.
Eight Piltown players were part of the Scoil Mhuire (Carrick-on-Suir) team who won the Munster Junior Colleges ‘C’ championship, beating Dungarvan’s Ard Scoil na nDeise by 5-7 to 3-4.
Kelly Ann Doyle, Chloe Holden, Aoife Doyle and Emily McCarthy started in the team, with Lisa Norris, Laura Power, Sophie Holden and Catherine Hearne named as subs.
Although Carrick started with a ferocious wind at their backs it was Ard Scoil who struck first with a goal. Kelly-Anne Doyle got Carrick into their stride with a superb goal following a lovely one-two with Aoife Murray.
Boosted by that score Carrick went on to take a 4-7 to 1-1 lead by half-time. Turning to face the wind their defence stood solid, Emily McCarthy and Chloe Holden leading the way.
Although Dungarvan hit a purple patch, reduced the lead to 10 points with 10 minutes to play a fifth Carrick goal effectively sealed the tie with seven minutes to play.
Both the Carrick senior and junior teams will face Connacht opposition in the All-Ireland semi finals. The senior will be played before March 22, with the junior game scheduled for the following week.
