Debate on one-way system for Assumption Place in Kilkenny

Kilkenny councillor calls for ancient St John’s graveyard wall to be lowered

Councillor Eugene Mc Guinness spoke on the matter at a recent meeting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District

A councillor is seeking further engagement with residents in Assumption Place in Kilkenny City to see their views on creating a one-way system that would increase parking in the residential estate.

City engineer, Ian Gardner told members of the Kilkenny City Municipal meeting that there was a proposal to make Assumption Place one-way to accommodate parking on both sides. Mr Gardner also pointed out at the meeting that making the road one-way with parking at both sides will inconvenience cyclists as they will also have to use it one-way.

Councillor Eugene McGuinness told the meeting they he had met with residents and had got signatures supporting a one-way system entering from the Dublin Road.

“I am very conscious that I put forward a one-way system and that over 90% of the residents agreed,” he said.

Cllr Andrew McGuinness remarked that he would like for any potential works to be costed and then for members to see if it is within budget and or how a plan be implemented and then liaise with the residents.

Mr Gardner also told members that it may be possible to part fund a scheme from Active Travel but that local funding would also be required.

Cllr Eugene McGuinness said that would be helpful to have a meeting with the residents, council members and Mr Gardner to see what optons might work best in the area.
