There will be plenty of local interest in this year's Academy Awards, with at least three strong Kilkenny connections to productions nominated for an Oscar.

An Cailín Ciúin – The Quiet Girl has two such connections. Kate Ui Ciobhain, originally from Kilkenny City, did the translation for the subtitles (translation to English and subtitles). Kate, whose maiden name is Lanigan, is the daughter of the late Jack and Kathleen Lanigan of 27 Emmet Street.

The second Cats connection out of the Irish-language film, which has become the first Irish language feature film to be nominated for an Oscar, is a Castlecomer one. John Brennan, Oak Hill was the sound engineer. John is a son of Betty and the late Seamus Brennan, Ardra, Bungalow.

A third link to Kilkenny is via Mark Swift - a producer of the animated movie Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which has been nominated for Best Animated Feature. American-based Mark was born in the UK to parents from Kilkenny. He still has strong family links here and visits regularly.

The 2023 Academy Awards takes place on March 23. Best of luck to all three locals on the night!
