Kilkenny Great War Memorial Committee will hold a commemorative ceremony at the Kilkenny Great War Memorial in the Peace Park, Kilkenny City on Sunday, April 23 at 4.30pm to remember those from the South-East of Ireland who served in the ANZAC Forces in World War I.
Ambassadors from Australia and New Zealand will be in attendance for the ceremony. The ceremony will consist of prayer, poetry, music, wreath laying, playing of the Last Post and Reveille, flag raising and concludes with the Australian, New Zealand and Irish national anthems.
The Irish soldiers, clergy and nurses were all volunteers who signed up with the new country to which they had emigrated.
Both Australia and New Zealand's identity were forged by the sacrifice made by their forces in the Allied armies of World War I.
The spirit and sacrifice of the ANZAC Forces is remembered every April 25 in dawn ceremonies around the world at the time of the assault of the ANZAC Forces in the Gallipoli Campaign.
All are welcome to attend the event. This is an outdoor event so please dress appropriately for the weather.
