TJ tops charts for inter-county scoring - two other Kilkenny men in top five

TJ Reid

TJ Reid can add to his tally on Sunday

TJ Reid has the chance to strengthen his grip on the title of hurling’s hotshot in Sunday’s All-Ireland final.

The Shamrocks supremo leads the way in the intercounty scoring charts having scored a whopping 30-544 with the Cats.
Reid is not the first Kilkenny player to top the scoring charts. Eddie Keher held the mantle for many years, taking the crown from Christy Ring in 1972, before he was overtaken by Henry Shefflin in 2010.

The Shamrocks man wrote his name into the record books in the Leinster semi-final win over Dublin in June 2010. Shefflin scored 12 points in the game, taking top spot in the scoring charts with a 65 converted in the 17th minute.

Shefflin didn’t stay on the throne for as long as Keher - he lasted 10 years - as Joe Canning took the crown in 2021. Canning’s haul of eight points saw him take pole position, but it came in an All-Ireland championship loss to Waterford in Thurles, Galway going down by 3-20 to 1-30 in Semple Stadium.

In keeping with shortening reigns, Canning didn’t get to enjoy the mantle of hurling’s hot-shot for too long. He was top for a year - Cork’s Patrick Horgan roared to number one when four points against Waterford in the Munster championship took his overall total to 22-505 (571 points) and eased him in front of Canning.

The last year has seen Reid and Horgan overtake each other, but Cork’s exit at the round robin stage in Munster allowed Reid to move ahead and stay in front.
