The Cats face a loss in extra time of All Ireland semi final

Unfortunately, it was not to be for the Kilkenny Intermediate Camogie Team in Semple Stadium, Thurles. The Kilkenny women took a devastating defeat to Derry after extra time in the Glen Dimplex Intermediate All Ireland Semi Final.

Kilkenny’s Laura Greene was the first of the day to dent the scoreboard. Derry struck straight back and took the lead at the 10 minute mark.

Sarah Barcoe, Emma Manogue and Laura Greene added a flurry of scores for the cats edging them into the lead to which was shortly followed by a Derry response of three unanswered points from Mary Hegarty and from Aine McAllister (2).

As the half time whistle approached, Emma Manogue slotted over a free to leave the interval score 0-6 to 0-5 in favour of the Oak Leaf County.

Derry came out of the tunnel, all guns blazing adding points on the restart to propel themselves further ahead.

The 38th minute saw a Derry penalty awarded as a result of the controversial “charging” rule that earned Kilkenny goalie Cliona Murphy a yellow card. She redeemed herself however by saving Aoife Shaw’s effort on goal.

Heading to the third quarter mark, Derry led by 10 points to 5 but failed to score again until the last seconds of added time.

During this time, Kilkenny hit a purple patch with scores from Ellen Gunner (2fs), Claire Doheny and Niamh Phelan pulling down the lead. With the teams now level, the Derry goalie Gribben reached to prevent a Kilkenny leading point from Emma Mulhall but could not stop Emma Manogue’s effort which put the cats ahead a minute later. Shaw converted a 45’ following another superb Cliona Murphy save, to send the game to extra time.

From the start of extra time, Derry rediscovered their earlier drive and made it 0-16 to 0-11 by half time with points from McGill, Shaw (2), McNicholl and McAllister.

Shaw added another point at the start of the second period of extra time. Ellen Gunner pointed two frees for Kilkenny, but the Oak Leaf County tagged on another three points through Aine McAllister (2) and Mary Hegarty.

Keara Ryan and Aine McAllister traded points to leave the final score 0-21 to 0-14 in favour of the Ulster side.
