Retained firefighters in Kilkenny and nationwide have resumed strike action today, after rejecting a Labour Court recommendation on pay and conditions.
Pickets have been place at retained fire stations across the country, but members will respond to life threatening calls.
SIPTU has accused local authorities of refusing to agree an emergency cover plan for the strike action.
Members of the retained service are part-time firefighters who are paid an annual retainer for being on call.
In Ireland, there are approximately 2,000 retained fire fighters, each on call 24/7.
