One in five Kilkenny social housing applicants refuse offers

A fifth of people who were offered social houses in Kilkenny refused in the first three months of 2023.

Kilkenny County Council offered 55 social housing applicants houses between January and March of this year.

Eleven of those refused offers, for varying reasons, including: ‘issues with area/estate being offered’, ‘issues with accommodation size or house type’ and ‘wanting to view the property in advance’.

Kilkenny County Council has advised that they consider multiple circumstances before offering applicants accommodation: “We only offer properties within applicants area of preference, we only offer the size of accommodation that applicant is approved for based on family composition and, we do not offer advance viewings.”

As such, the 11 refusals were deemed ‘unreasonable’ because according to standards, said reasons are insufficient.

No personal details relating to any of the applicants was disclosed in response to a request which was submitted to the council under the Freedom of Information Act.

The request relates to the first quarter of this year, from January 1 to March 31.
