Solid Fuel Merchants Ireland (SFMI), the national association representing solid fuel retailers, gathered recently to present their Budget 2024 Submission to members of the Oireachtas.

During the briefing, SFMI members engaged with TDs and Senators to underscore the need for government support on key industry issues. The Oireachtas Briefing served as a vital platform for SFMI to articulate the industry's concerns and emphasise the urgency of addressing these challenges in the upcoming budget.

Key points addressed during the briefing included:

Tackling Solid Fuel Smuggling: SFMI members passionately advocated for increased funding to enhance enforcement measures aimed at combatting the ongoing problem of solid fuel smuggling into the state. The illicit trade not only undermines the legitimate industry but also poses significant environmental and health risks. SFMI underscored the need for greater resources at a local level to tackle this issue effectively.

Inclusion in Just Transition Funding: SFMI made a compelling case for the inclusion of the solid fuel industry in any Just Transition funding scheme. As the world transitions to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, SFMI  members stressed that support for affected workers and communities is essential to ensure a fair and equitable transition for all.

EPA Registration for Solid Fuel Retailers: SFMI called attention to the importance of registering solid fuel retailers with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This registration would help regulate the industry, ensure compliance with environmental standards, and foster responsible practices among retailers.

Speaking at the briefing, Kilkenny man Colin Ahern, Chairperson of SFMI and owner of Marble CIty Fuels, said: "Today's Oireachtas Briefing was a critical opportunity for us to engage directly with policymakers and convey the challenges our industry faces.

"We are committed to working collaboratively with the government to ensure a sustainable and responsible future for the solid fuel sector. Our Budget 2024 Submission is a call for action, and we hope our concerns will be seriously considered in the upcoming budget deliberations."

SFMI says it remains dedicated to its mission of representing and advocating for the interests of solid fuel merchants in Ireland, while also promoting the industry's alignment with Ireland's environmental goals.
