Works on Kilkenny water mains will be ongoing until early next year

A significant investment by Uisce Eireann and Kilkenny County Council involving the replacement of of ageing and damaged water mains in Rathduff will take place this month.

These water mains have been prone to bursts, causing disruption to homes and businesses in the area. This infrastructure upgrade aims to provide a reliable water supply for the community and reduce the frequency of bursts and outages.

Scheduled to commence in October, the works will begin from the crossroads on the R700 towards Kilkenny and end at Barrons Court. To minimise the impact on customers, areas of work will be limited to short sections.

In addition, a stop/go traffic management system will be in place to ensure the smooth flow of traffic, while local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

While the works may require some short-term water interruptions, Uisce Éireann assures customers that they will be given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned interruptions.

Programme Manager, for Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, Dave Murphy is looking forward to getting crews on site.

“Old and damaged water mains remain a huge source of leakage and continue to impact communities right across Ireland, causing low pressure and supply disruption. Replacing these old water mains in poor condition will eliminate existing leaks and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.”

Dave Murphy also extended his gratitude to the community of Rathduff for their patience and cooperation during the works. He highlighted that the short-term inconvenience will be greatly outweighed by the lasting benefits of a reliable water supply

Shareridge Civil Engineering will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann and are expected to be completed by early 2024.

The works involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customer’s water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these are being replaced.
