Gardaí in Kilkenny are warning people of the significant danges of illegal fireworks in the run up to Halloween.

A garda spokesperson told The Kilkenny People that fireworks had went through a downstairs window of a house in the city in recent days causing damage to carpets.

"Thankfully no one was hurt. Fireworks are illegal and are incredibly dangerous both to people and property," he said.

The KSPCA have also issued advice for dog owners as fireworks cause extreme distress to dogs and many other animals.

"You should bring your animals inside at this time of the year to reduce the noise they are exposed to. If you need to leave your animal outside, make sure they are in a secure and safe location they can’t escape from. They must have a secure place to hide indoors if they are frightened by the noises of fireworks," a spokesperson said.

Unlicensed fireworks are illegal in Ireland, and so is the lighting and throwing of them at a person or property, and these offences carry a fine up to €10,000 or up to five years in prison.

Anyone who has information on the illegal use of fireworks should contact gardaí in Kilkenny on (056) 7775000.
