Kilkenny camogie player Michelle Teehan has lended her support to Self-Help Africa, a charity which aims to alleviate hunger, poverty, social inequality and the impact of climate change in rural Africa.
The campaign hopes to plant one million trees in Africa in partnership with Self Help Africa and later this month Teehan and a group of fellow GAA stars and musicians will travel to Kenya as part of the 'Warriors for Humanity' campaign in aid of the cause.
The James Stephens camogie player has faced many challenges on the GAA field over the few number of years and this latest hurdle is a hurdle is one the local woman is greatly looking forward to.
"I’m absolutely delighted to be part of this helping Self-Help Africa, who’ve been doing this for years so the fact the GPA can come in and support them by actually physically doing something to help is really exciting."
Despite the round the world trip, Teehan claims the seeds for the idea was sewn a little closer to home.
"My teammate Grace Walsh went out last year to Kenya and there was a programme on TG4 about it and she came back with everything she learned from being out there and I just felt it was really inspiring. It’s always hard to do something unknown and even her (Grace) coming back telling us all about it was amazing but I felt I had to go and do it myself as you could see she was really humbled by it."
The sportswoman hopes their visit can help local farmers become more sustainable in the combat against climate change.
The trip isn’t all serious though. As well as planting trees there will also be games of Gaelic football and soccer played with Teehan hoping she’ll have plenty of tales to tell.
