'Cois Nore’s care and support was vital to our family’ - Kilkenny Live

The care and compassion shown by Cois Nore helped Mervyn Queally (inset) and his family in their time of need. Now he is calling on people to support the group as they fundraise for their new home

Mervyn and Louise knew each other since their childhood, but it wasn’t until Louise returned from England, in her 20s to work in her family business that their love story took flight.

Little did they know, their lives were about to be tested in unimaginable ways.

Louise, plagued by a persistent pain in the back of her neck for an extended period, relied on intermittent painkillers, which provided temporary relief. However, as soon as the medication wore off, the excruciating sensation would return, leaving Louise in utter agony.

One night, while she was in unbearable pain, Louise and Mervyn decided to call an ambulance. Within days, their lives were forever changed as Louise received a devastating diagnosis - two cancerous tumours at the back of her neck.

With the couple’s children then aged four, 8 10, 12, 22, the impact of Louise’s diagnosis extended beyond her and Mervyn. Recognising the need for support, Louise undertook the admirable task of arranging therapy sessions for all their children at Cois Nore, Kilkenny’s cancer support service.

“Louise’s strength and determination to ensure our children had the necessary support during this challenging time was remarkable,” said Mervyn. “It was she who set up therapy sessions at Cois Nore for our kids.

“The organisation, along with its incredible team, were vital pillars of support for Louise following her diagnosis and her untimely death in 2017.”

Cois Nore, renowned for its unwavering commitment to those navigating the hardships of illness, offered a safe haven for the family. Understanding the emotional toll of the journey, they not only provided therapeutic sessions but also lent a helping hand in creating a memory book from Louise for Mervyn and each of the children.

“The memory book was a labour of love, crafted meticulously by Louise, with the unwavering support of the Cois Nore team,” he added. “They dedicated their time and effort to help her compile a beautiful memento for us all. Little did I know that this incredible gesture was taking shape in the background. Their contribution brought immeasurable solace to Louise during those trying times and to us all after her passing.”

Mervyn hopes that by sharing his story he will highlight the crucial importance of Cois Nore and its unwavering support to cancer patients and their extended families in the Kilkenny area.

As Cois Nore gears up to move to a more suitable facility on the Waterford Road in Kilkenny, it is embarking on a significant fundraising initiative this Christmas. This ambitious endeavour will ensure that Cois Nore continues to support cancer patients and their families for decades to come.
