National broadband rollout nears completion in Thomastown and Callan

National Broadband Ireland, the company delivering the new future-proofed, high-speed Fibre-to-the-Home network under the National Broadband Plan on behalf of the Government, has said that almost 4,000 Kilkenny properties in its Thomastown and Mullinahone deployment areas will soon be able to connect to its high-speed fibre broadband network.

The area also includes the rural areas and townlands surrounding Thomastown, Mount Juliet, Callan, Kilmanagh and Stoneyford.

19,000 premises in County Kilkenny are included in the State’s Intervention Area, which will see NBI deliver minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second to homes, businesses, farms, and schools. As the biggest investment in rural Ireland since rural electrification, County Kilkenny will receive €72M of Government investment under the National Broadband Plan.

Construction works are underway to connect 2,774 homes, farms and businesses in the Thomastown and 1,193 premises in the Mullinahone deployment areas to NBI’s high-speed network and are expected to be completed in the first half of next year. National Broadband Ireland is calling on people living near Thomastown and Callan to visit nbi.ie/eoi to sign up for notifications on when they will be able be able to join the network. 

Works have already been completed in other parts of Kilkenny and there are a total of 12,965 premises that are available to pre-order or order high-speed, reliable broadband across the county with 3,471 connections made so far. National Broadband Ireland is calling on people to visit nbi.ie/map/ and enter their Eircode to see if they are ready to connect.

Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: “We are pleased that our rollout works near Thomastown and Callan are nearing completion. A connection to the National Broadband Ireland network will enable users to experience the life-changing benefits that high-speed fibre broadband provides. 

“We’ve made great progress in other parts of the county as well and services on our network are already available. At present, over 2,000 premises in Borris and over 3,600 near Kilkenny city can avail of high-speed fibre broadband today. We’re calling on people living and working in those areas to check the NBI website to find out how they can order a high-speed connection.”

As a wholesale network operator, NBI does not sell fibre broadband directly to end users, rather it enables services from a range of broadband providers or Retail Service Providers (RSPs). As a wholesale provider, NBI will make the new Fibre-to-the-Home network available to all RSPs operating in the Intervention Area.   

Some 66 RSPs have already signed up to sell services on the National Broadband Ireland network and 59 are certified as ready to start providing connections as of today. National Broadband Ireland contractors have been on the ground across the country and over 212,771 premises nationwide can order or pre-order broadband on the NBI network so far.
