'She added so much to this school' - Kilkenny principal remembers late teacher Mary Hackett

Principal Shane Campion of Lisnafunchin National School offered condolences in the wake of her death. 

A Kilkenny national school principal has offered condolences to the family of a retired teacher upon her death. 

Mary Hackett of Dublin Road, Co Kilkenny and formerly of Headford, Co Galway passed away on January 29, 2024 peacefully at St Luke's Hospital. 

Principal Shane Campion of Lisnafunchin National School spoke highly of the former teacher. 

He said, "On behalf of Lisnafunchin National School, I would like to express my condolences to Mary and her family. She added so much to this school and the effort will never be forgotten.

"The students and teachers will hold her in our thoughts and prayers this week." 

According to RIP.ie, she is predeceased by her parents John and Kate, brother Christy and sisters Anne and Sr. Leo (Jane). 

Mary will be sadly missed by her brothers John (Cordarra) and Tom (Galway), sisters-in-law Marion and Mary, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.

Reposing in Johnston's Funeral Home, John's Green, Kilkenny (R95XE00) on Friday morning with Funeral Prayers at 9.45am followed by removal to St. John's Church, Kilkenny arriving for Requiem Mass at 10.30am. 

Removal afterwards to Carey's Funeral Home, Headford, Co. Galway (H91E6X9) where Mary will repose on Friday evening from 6pm with removal at 7pm to St. Mary's Church, Headford.

Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at noon with interment afterwards in Cloughanover Cemetery.

Dozens of mourners have left condolences on RIP.ie, including the following: 

"Deepest sympathies to all of Mary’s family on your very sad loss. Mary was a treasured friend of our late mother, Bernie. They enjoyed many long chats and days out together. Mary always spoke so lovingly about her family. We are thinking of and praying for you at this sad time. May Mary Rest in Peace." 

"Sincere sympathy to all Ms. Hacket’s family and friends on her great loss. She made a huge contribution to the education of pupils in County Kilkenny. Grateful for her service and dedication given so generously. May her soul enjoy the peace and reward of Heaven." 

"So sad to hear of Mary's death. I only got to know her in recent years but always enjoyed her company and her mischievous sense of humour. She will be sadly missed by her 10.30am friends in St Johns. Sincere condolences to Mary's family and friends. Enjoy your reward in Heaven, Mary." 

"Sincere condolences to Mary's family and friends. Such a kind, gentle lady and a good friend. Rest in Peace Mary."

"Our deepest condolences to Mary’s extended family. Mary was a lovely lady who enriched our family over the years. The McElwain clan was very fortunate to have Mary in our circle. Our mum Terry counted Mary among her nearest and dearest. May she rest in peace."
