A man was stabbed in the Market Cross Shopping Centre in Kilkenny City this afternoon, just after lunchtime.
Emergency services arrived at the scene just off High Street where they treated the victim for a number of wounds, before he was rushed to St Luke's General Hospital. A woman was also treated for shock. It is believed the victim of the attack is a local man.
Gardai arrived almost immediately, and a man, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested within a short distance of the scene. He is currently being detained in Kilkenny Garda Station.
The scene was quickly closed off by uniformed and plainclothes gardai, and a section at the High Street entrance to Market Cross remains closed for a technical examination. Traffic in the area was disrupted for some time, but has since returned to normal.
