Met Éireann has extended a Status Red snow and ice warning as they forecast blizzard conditions tonight and during Friday in Leinster and Munster.

They added: "Southern and eastern coastal counties expected to receive exceptionally high accumulations."

The updated warning came into effect at 7pm this evening and is valid until 6pm tomorrow (Friday).

The initial Status Red was due to expire at 3pm but the time has now been extended.

"Today is what we call an 'ice-day' in meterological terms, where nowhere in the country is above zero degrees," forecaster Evelyn Cusack told RTE's Six One News.
