Over 3,000 people make up Ireland's prison population and 34 of them are from Kilkenny

Some 34 of the country’s over 3,000 prisoners are from Kilkenny, new figures have revealed.

The data was published by the Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan. It revealed that 34 people in the prison population– all of whom are male – are from Kilkenny.

In 2016 a staffed prison space cost €69,421.
