Callan athlete Mary Fitzgerald
Local athlete Mary Fitzgerald from Callan, Co. Killkenny was awarded two gold medals in athletics at the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports (IWAS) Youth World Games.
Mary Fitzgerald performed consistently throughout the week, taking home a gold medal and an Irish record on day one of the competition in (F40) Javelin. Her success continued into day two where she won her second gold in Discus.
The IWAS games featuring Athletics, Table Tennis and Swimming in the facilities of Athlone IT and the Regional Sports Centre is a unique experience, that gives young athletes with a physical disability worldwide, an opportunity to develop their sporting experiences and gives them a taste of the challenges and disciplines which are a significant stepping stone on the development pathway for any aspiring Paralympic athlete. Athletes from over 30 countries worldwide, split into three age groups, Under 23, Under 20 and Under 17, travelled to Ireland to compete last week.
Over the week the Irish team took centre stage in track and field with Ireland performing strongly to finish 6th on the athletic medals table. By the end of the week the athletes impressively achieved 11 Medals in total which includes 3 Gold, 5 Silver and 3 Bronze.
