Two Kilkenny-based theatre practitioners are exploring the concept of home through the lived experiences of individuals who are participating in this project.
Ita Morrissey and Hannah McCormick are both renowned for creating thought-provoking community theatre and are currently engaging in collating stories as they embark on this project, Home.
“We applied for funding from the Kilkenny Arts Office to develop a theatre piece exploring the stories and lived in experiences of people from all over the world who have made Kilkenny their home,” explained Ita Morrissey.
“Originally we thought that the project would be focused on the immigrant community but we decided to expand that invitation and make it more open. With the response we got we discovered that exploring the ideas of home is more complex that what we originally anticipated. What we discovered was that some people that have lived in Kilkenny for years are not able to make Kilkenny their home because of the house and rental prices,” said Hannah McCormick.
Kilkenny City Library hosted a series of facilitated conversations to tease out what home is.
“The idea originated around two years ago in the context of the cultural landscape at the time and how it was changing with the migrant crisis. As creative beings we wanted to respond through theatre,
“We are in the very early stages of development,” Ita added. “ We are trying to find out what stories people have to share and we have been surprised by how heartfelt and thought-provoking those stories have been.”
The project to date involves six participants who engaged in a series of meetings where stories are gathered and scripts written over the course of a month.
A rehearsed reading of the works will take place at Kilkenny City Library on Saturday at 12.30pm. All are welcome to attend.
