Talbot's Tower in Kilkenny
The news broke that three hundred houses are planned for the city. Local auctioneer Peter McCreery revealed that the 32.6 acres of land is zoned mixed use residential.
A feasilbility study on the site was conducted by architect, Mark Bannon and it showed a new development consisting of 307 prime residential units.
Bids opened at €2million and after 42 separate bids from five interested parties, the gavel dropped at €5.4 million. The western environs is earmarked for considerable development over the coming years.
Meanwhile Talbot's Tower, the last surviving defensive tower on the medieval Kilkenny City Wall circuit was opened to the public. The pocket park developed around the restored tower will open seven days a week and locals and visitors can use the facility as a meeting point, a place to relax and a place to learn about the tower and the City Wall.
During May the annual Darkness Into Light walk took place with an incredible 6,500 people taking part in the event. Many of those who took part in the event carried photos and mementos of their loved ones and there was a wonderful atmosphere of camaderie and support.
Meanwhile in the city frustrations mounted over the ongoing roadworks at Patrick Street which businessowners blamed for a decline in trade.
In positive news it was reported that Kilkenny has taken its most significant step yet in a bid to secure a campus as part of the Technological University of the South East, on the back of a new report.
The report, ‘From Charter to Framework: The case for Third Level provision was launched in the Parade Tower in May by the Minister of State with Responsibility for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O’Connor. The document concluded that there is a ‘convincing’ case for locating higher education provision in Kilkenny, and sets out four options, which are not mutually exclusive, as to how this can be realised.
Kilkenny County Council has set a base target of 1,000 students for this.
