The World War I British War Medal awarded to Pte J Brennan, Ballycallan, Kilkenny
The war medal of a Kilkenny man killed in France during World War I, exactly 100 years ago, has been reunited with his family.
A call in the Kilkenny People newspaper for the relations of Pte John Brennan, Ballycallan to come forward was answered by his grand niece, Margaret Maher from Ballintaggart, Callan.
She responded to an article in the paper which put her in touch with the man who had possession of the medal.
“My granduncle John Brennan of the Royal Irish Regiment was killed in WW1 and his original medals were never seen,” Margaret said.
He lived in Ballintaggart, Callan which at the time went as Kilmanagh and his name is on the memorial plaque in Callan.
“I went to Le Pilly in France last September to the battle field where he was killed and it means so much to me to have this medal,” she added.
She thanked the kind hearted man who made contact with the Kilkenny People about the medal he found in a relation’s home after he died and for returning the medal.
