In Kilkenny on Christmas Day local politicians and sports stars joined a group of volunteers to help deliver Meals on Wheels prepared by Defence Forces members from Stephen’s Barracks.
One of those participating, Councillor Pat Fitzpatrick said: “Delighted to join members of the Defence Forces and An Garda Síochána together with my colleague Cllr Joe Malone, Hurling All Star Mikey Butler with a host of young volunteers delivering the Meals on Wheels beautifully prepared by Defence Forces at Kilkenny’s Stephens Barracks. Well done to all involved. Stay safe and Happy Christmas.”
Almost 100 dinners were also delivered on Christmas Day to elderly people in Kilkenny and Carlow by the charity ALONE. Across Ireland, over a thousand meals were distributed by ALONE who says there was especially high demand in Dublin, Cork and Galway.
In Thomastown, there was the annual Christmas lunch, now in its 6th year at Thomastown Community Centre. Christmas dinner with all the trimmings was served to people living alone in the locality who got the opportunity to share in the Christmas festivities in a convivial group setting.
All the events show that the Christmas spirit is alive and thriving in Kilkenny.
