Rachael Blackmore and Ain't That a Shame claim victory for Henry de Bromhead in the 2024 Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase
Champion Kilkenny trainer Willie Mullins will seek to extend his record to ten wins at the latest renewal of the Goffs Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park next Thursday, January 23.
His team of six entries looks set to include early market leader Nick Rockett and last year's runner-up Glengouly. Other potential call-ups from Mullins's yard include Klarc Kent, Chavez, Spanish Harlem, and MacDermott.
Waterford-based Henry de Bromhead has two entries in the race: Eklat De Rire, who was favourite when finishing down the field in 2022, and Largy Debut, who has placed on two occasions over fences at Gowran Park. Wexford's Paul Nolan will be searching for his first Thyestes Chase win with his entry Daily Present. He was previously beaten on the line in the 2005 Thyestes Chase when his charge Kymandjen was pipped by future Grand National winner Numbersixvalverde. Pat Fahy's Stormy Judge has also been entered, having finished fourth place in last year's Thyestes. There's no doubt that he will be a crowd favourite if he lines up next Thursday.
Little under half of the 30 entries are travelling down from the Royal County. Gordon Elliott has entered Coko Beach, winner of the Thyestes Chase in 2021. Coko is one of ten entries for the Cullentra team and an early top-weight for this year's race. His fellow Meath trainer and rival Gavin Cromwell will be looking to continue a rich run of form with two entries, Yeah Man and Velvet Elvis.
While discussing the Goffs Thyestes Chase Day, Gowran Park's general manager Eddie Scally said, "Goffs Thyestes Day really kick-starts our season in Gowran Park and we really appreciate how racing enthusiasts from all over support this day every year in their thousands. The Goffs Thyestes Chase is this region’s biggest and most iconic race where horses, trainers and jockeys have the chance to put their name in the history books. Goffs Thyestes Chase is a true highlight of the Irish National Hunt season and is a day with which we are very proud to be associated."
Henry Beeby, group chief executive at Goffs, added that "Many of the greats have won the Thyestes over the years, none more so than the most famous Goffs graduate of all time in Arkle, after whom our market-leading store sale is named. Goffs Thyestes day is the perfect way to kick off the inspection period for the Arkle Sale, particularly given the Southeast is such a significant region for National Hunt breeders, vendors and buyers. Eddie Scally and the team at Gowran Park do a superb job each year, and we look forward to another top class Goffs Thyestes next week".
