Ukraine was invaded by Russia on February 24 of last year, sparking a violent conflict that forced many Ukrainians from their homes and country in search of refuge.

Approximately 1,400 Ukrainians now call Kilkenny home and many of our county’s newest citizens showed up on The Parade on Friday to mark the anniversary of the invasion and show their support for their home country.

In attendance to show solidarity was the Mayor of Kilkenny, David Fitzgerald, and Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Pat Fitzpatrick.

While the process of resettlement can be challenging for refugees, many Ukrainians have found a welcoming community in Kilkenny and are contributing to local life in various ways.

They have brought with them their unique customs and traditions, which have been embraced by the local community.

In the space of one short year, the Ukrainian community in Kilkenny has become an integral part of the county’s fabric, and their response to the anniversary of the invasion highlights their resilience and determination to support their home country, even from afar.

Ukrainian refugees have also become active members of the local community, contributing to various social initiatives and organisations since arriving here.

The gathering in Kilkenny was just one of many events held throughout Ireland to mark the anniversary of the invasion.

Nationally, the CSO says that as of the week ending February 12, 2023 a total of 74,458 people have arrived from Ukraine.

This is up from the 67,448 Personal Public Service Numbers (PPSNs) issued to individuals from Ukraine under the Temporary Protection Directive on December 11 2022.
