Archive - Litter a major problem in Kilkenny City

Whether or not Kilkenny should be entered for this year’s Tidy Towns competition was a matter of doubt at Monday’s meeting of Kilkenny Corporation.

Ald M McGuinness thought that the city could not pick up many marks with the present state of many streets and roadways.

Mayor Kieran Crotty TD said that the litter problem would have to be tackled seriously. It was getting progressively worse and all the litter bins in the city had disappeared through vandalism.

However, Kilkenny Corporation could not just throw its hands up in the air and do nothing else. The problem would have to be tackled. Mayor Crotty thought the Borough Engineer might have to give some thought to the designing of some permanent type of litter bin.

Mr T Martin said that while the problem did not all lie simply with young people, at the same time in the long run it could probably best be tackled in the schools.

He thought if the Mayor were to speak about litter in one or two city schools every week it would eventually have a very beneficial effect.

Another problem which would have to be tackled was the problem of parked cars. Something ought to be done to encourage car owners to park their vehicles on different sides of the street on alternative nights so the cleaners could deal with the litter problem and not be hampered by the parked cars.

Windows Smashed
Window smashers ran riot in Kilkenny early on Wednesday morning, breaking 10 large windows in seven business premises.
Most of the breakings were on Parliament Street.

Here, the front plate glass windows of Mr Liam Moore’s drapery store, the Hibernian Bar, Mr John Murtagh’s chemist’s shop, Wall’s betting office and Brennan’s pork shop were smashed.

Nearby, in Newbuilding Lane, four windows in the paint store of Mr Dick Broderick were broken. Just a short distance away a front plate glass window of the Black Cat was smashed.

Captain Drives In
History was made at Kilkenny Golf Club on Saturday afternoon when, for the first time, a newly-elected captain drove into office.

He is Herbie Masterson, who was elected captain at the club’s annual meeting on Friday.

The drive was worthy of his position, a nice long one straight down the fairway.
