Galen, a privately owned pharmaceutical company, has named Shane Fahy as the winner of the Dr John Hinds Scholarship Award for 2023, in association with the College of Paramedics and The ATACC Group.

The scholarship is presented in memory of the late Dr John Hinds who passed away almost eight years ago.  Dr Hinds was regarded as an inspirational leader by paramedics and emergency medical technicians, and indeed, by anyone with an interest in pre-hospital care across Ireland. As a world-renowned critical care physician from Northern Ireland, the scholarship is a fitting and practical way to preserve the memory of such a well-respected colleague and medical professional.

Shane, an Advanced Paramedic Supervisor for Kilkenny Ambulance Station was presented with his award by Cliodna Gilroy and Bronagh Laverty from Galen, alongside College of Paramedics Northern Ireland representative Jacqueline O’Neill. They discussed Shane’s winning clinical case study based on catastrophic haemorrhaging from multiple stab wounds.

Speaking about his win, Shane said: “It is a great honour to have been chosen for this wonderful scholarship in memory of an inspirational man who did so much work advocating for the people of Northern Ireland and the Paramedic profession.”

Dr Dennise Broderick, Galen’s Managing Director and President said: “On behalf of Galen, congratulations to Shane Fahy on this remarkable achievement. We are extremely proud to sponsor this award, recognising the extraordinary efforts of paramedics like Shane, and supporting ongoing professional development and excellence in the field. We look forward to hearing more about Shane’s experience of the coveted Anaesthesia Trauma and Critical Care (ATACC) course.

“We are delighted to continue our partnership with The College of Paramedics and pay tribute to Dr John Hinds’ legacy – a renowned and highly respected pre-hospital physician, who dedicated his life to advancing emergency medicine and improving pre-hospital care across Ireland. This tireless dedication to patient well-being is at the core of Galen’s vision to benefit the health of all generations and provide extraordinary service that will make a positive impact on patients' lives.”

Galen’s continued collaboration with College of Paramedics has been confirmed for a fifth year as they renew their commitment to the award for 2024.
