A number of Kilkenny City businesses are counting the cost of flash floods today following a massive downpouring of rain which saw them take on water.
Ground floor and below-ground floor premises on Patrick Street were among those worst affected. Staff scrambled to keep water out, and units from Kilkenny Fire Station attended the scene, bringing in pumps to help bail out beleaguered businesses.
The street itself has been damaged, with a tear appearing in the middle of the road. A large amount of gravel was washed out from under the road and the kerbs came apart.
The road has been dug up and resurfaced a number of times in recent years for several different work projects, including water mains replacement, and undergrounding of cables and new public lighting.
Parnell Street was also flooded, as were roads in several housing estates and around Nowlan Park.
