A new home for Kilkenny's historic panels of Ossory

A new home will be found for the iconic panels depicting the history of Ossory after they were destroyed and removed during the ongoing works on Kilkenny’s Ring Road.

The matter was raised at a meeting of the Kilkenny Municipal District by Councillor David Fitzgerald who said that he is ‘anxious to ensure the moulds are retained and the panels will be recast’.

The interpretative panels were removed as part of ongoing improvement works to improve accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists on the N10 in the vicinity of Ossory Bridge.

“I am asking the council to find a suitable location for the panels,” he said adding that he had spoken to the artists, Charlie and Joan Smith who created the work and that they are happy to assist in any way they can.

“There are very anxious that they be reinstated,” he said.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for the council to find a suitable space where the people of Kilkenny can go and have the space to enjoy them.”

Director of Services, Tim Butler said that the panels were removed from a safety point of view and that they could not be reinstated as they were erected using reinforced concrete.

“The Public Art Management Group will consider where would be an appropriate site in consultation with the artists who created the panels,” he said.
