Permission granted for major new building in Kilkenny

The new building is primed to be developed in The Abbey Quarter in the heart of Kilkenny City
An Bord Pleanála have decided to grant planning permission for a major new building at The Abbey Quarter in Kilkenny City.
Kilkeny Abbey Quarter Development Partnership originally submitted plans to Kilkenny County Council back in May 2022 seeking permission to develop a new mixed-use building varying in height from 4 to 5 storeys (set back at top floor) on a site at Abbey Quarter, in the townland of Gardens, Kilkenny.
Original plans were that the building would comprise 3 to 4 floors of office accommodation together with plant above ground-floor mixed uses including reception, offices, retail and support space together with signage and associated site development works.
The local authority requested a number of items of further information from the applicant before eventually deciding to grant planning permission in May 2023, subject to 12 conditions.
That decision from the local authority to grant permission was subsequently appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
After reviewing the application, An Bord Pleanála opted to grant permission for the development, subject to nine conditions, on July 16, 2024.
