A car accident on a busy Kilkenny City road has again brought into focus the need for safety measures in the area.

Last Friday emergency services were called to the scene of a traffic accident on the Kennyswell Road (pictured above).

Now a city councillor is calling on motorists to slow down and take personal responsibility for their driving, to make the roads safer for all road users.

Cllr John Coonan has also voiced his support for measures being considered by Kilkenny County Council to tackle the issues on the road. “Kennyswell Road has presented a problem for some years, it’s an old road in an old part of the city,” he said.

Developments in the area have lead to congestion.
The county council is considering limiting parking to residents only, which he supports. Cllr Coonan suggested the council should also look again at widening the road, as a safety measure. “There is always something more that can be done.”
However, the city councillor stressed, as motorists we must all take personal responsibility for our behaviour behind the wheel.

Cllr Seán Ó hArgáin has also taken note of the incident and has asked Kilkenny County Council to urgently address traffic management issues in the area.

He has submitted the following notice of motion to the next Municipal District Meeting: "In the light of additional and welcome housing development in the environs of Kennyswell Road and the existing traffic difficulties in the area, that Kilkenny Municipal District demands an urgent solution to the need for safe traffic management, including parking, adjacent to Kenny’s Well itself and that this arrangement will involve consultation with all the residents of the area."
