Major structural development in the pipeline for Kilkenny

The erection of a new bridge linking Cootes Lane to the Ring Road in Kilkenny City is set for completion in the coming months.

The structure of the bridge was lifted into place earlier this month with works ongoing.

Donnelly Civil Engineering Ltd successfully installed the 16.5m span steel bridge over the River Breagagh as part of the Coote's Lane Active Travel Scheme for Kilkenny County Council.

The 12-tonne steel structure which was designed by Kilgallen and Partners Consulting Engineers Ltd (who have an office in Kilkenny) and was lifted into position using a 110t mobile crane.   

Works will continue for the next month on the completion of the two boardwalk approaches to the east and west of the bridge.

The bridge is expected to help meet the aims and recommendations found in the Kilkenny Local Transport Plan.

Another primary objective of the bridge is to allow for the creation of a cycle route between the Eastern Environs and the soon-to-be highly developed Breagagh Valley.

Kilkenny County Council have emphasised the priority of investing in cycling and other smarter travel projects in a bid to support the concept of a '10-minute city’.

A 10-minute city seeks to have all community facilities and services accessible within a 10-minute walk or cycle from homes.
