A planned medical centre for James Stephens Military Barracks has been secured ‘beyond doubt’, according to local TD John McGuinness.

In the past concern was often expressed about the future of the barracks. However, Deputy McGuinness said investment in recent years in the barracks’ infrastructure has greatly improved conditions for the men and women serving our State.

“Coupled with the huge investment in a state-of-the-art gym, a separate training facility and now a planned medical centre the barracks future is secured beyond doubt,” he said.

Cllr Joe Malone, himself a former Defence Forces member who served in the medical core in James Stephen’s Barracks, has welcomed the planned development of the centre.

“The new medical centre will care for the general health of the members of the force serving in Kilkenny and will also provide health checks on those members preparing to serve on missions abroad,” he said.

“The living quarters for serving soldiers needs to be constantly maintained and developed. I am delighted that this work continues adding to the investment being made by Government.”
