The Butts in Kilkenny

Housing in the Butts area was back on the council agenda at the most recent sitting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District in July.

In an updated presentation to city councillors, it was acknowledged some tenants may need to temporarily move residence for a period, 'depending on the extent of works' as upgrades take place and new family and age friendly homes are constructed.

The council intend to seek potential redesign solutions in consultation with tenants and 'align units to current space standards, where possible'.

Currently, two pilot houses have been selected on Pearse Street and Connolly Street.

A number of smaller improvements are also planned following a housing stock condition survey.

The developments form parts of the Butts Regeneration Plan, where a vast array of improvements are in the pipeline including the development of green and food growing spaces along with the erection of a brand new playing pitch and dressing rooms.

Ongoing traffic concerns in the Butts are also hoped to be addressed, with the prohibition of a right turn from the Tullaroan Road expected to be in place by September, with a review expected later this year.

Councillors in the city will meet again following the summer break in September where the matter is expected to feature again.
