Kilkenny's deputy mayor expresses regret after photo with controversial rock star

Local Green Party representative and Deputy Mayor of Kilkenny City, Cllr Maria Dollard has expressed 'regret' at any offence caused by the posting of a video on social media with former lead vocalist of the punk rock band The Sex Pistols John Lydon.

Mr Lydon cared for his wife Nora during her battle with Alzheimer's Disease until her passing in 2023 and during a recent show at the Watergate Theatre shared many stories from that period as well as other parts of his life both on and off the stage.

However, some of the rock star's political views have made him a divisive figure with some locals believing Cllr Dollard placing the mayoral chain around Mr Lydon and posing for a picture inappropriate.

"It has been pointed out to me since the concert earlier this week that John Lydon has expressed some strong held political views; views that I (nor, I'd doubt most of the Kilkenny audience) would share," the Green Party councillor said.

"I wasn't aware of this until a friend pointed it out to me. In that regard, I regret if what was a bit of fun after a show of someone who I liked for their music and their story of caring for their loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, has caused any offence.

"I have fought for social justice all my life. I can say too that at no point during the gig did John Lydon say anything that would cause me concern; the talk was about his life and career," Cllr Dollard continued.

"I'm grateful to my friend for pointing it out to me that he has expressed views that I would fundamentally disagree with," she concluded.
