Steady progress is being made on three significant projects in Kilkenny City.
The HGV Management Plan and the Kieran Street/Market Square projects have all taken steps forward according to Senior Engineer with Kilkenny County Council, who provided a brief update to councillors at September’s sitting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District.
HGV Plan: Is currently at the signage design stage and nearing completion. Earlier this year it was reported plans are afoot locally to develop two new city routes in order to combat traffic congestion and the impact of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs).
HGVs have become a particular point of concern in parts of the city, particularly on the Circular Road, at the junction beside the Sceilp Inn.

The council intends to develop a new route that will transfer HGV traffic from that area and move vehicles to a newly constructed road better equipped to hold HGV traffic.
There is also plans to build a new, alternative route from the western side of the city via St Francis’s Bridge.
Mr Cullen told councillors this project is estimated to be completed by October of this year.
Enhancement Scheme: It’s anticipated works can begin on the St Kieran’s Street and Market Square Urban Enhancement Scheme will begin imminently with a contractor now appointed. The decluttering of furniture, signage and the enhancement of urban space are planned for the project.
