Questions raised over horse ownership following horror collision in Kilkenny

Emergency services attended the distressing scene

The Chair of the Animal Welfare Committee is 'horrified' by the death of four horses in a collision on the outskirts of Kilkenny City on Friday morning.

Emergency services attended the scene at approximately 6am  involving a van and horses on the slip road at Junction 8 on the M9 Southbound at Kilkenny city. It is understood that the horses were not micro-chipped.

"It was horrifying to see the reports of dead horses in Kilkenny and I am aware that there is an ongoing investigation into what happened.

"I want to commend Kilkenny gardaí and fire services for their prompt response to the incident and I would like to appeal to anyone who may have seen something to come forward," said Cllr McGuinness.

“Incidents like this really bring responsible horse ownership into question. If this incident is a result of something malicious then those responsible must be brought to justice,” he added.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that an investigation is underway following the incident. A male was also treated for minor injuries.

Meanwhile Labour Party councillor, Cllr Sean Ó hArgain has described the death of the horses as a 'huge concern to us all'.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Kilkenny gardaí on (056) 77 5000.
