Pictures: Heavy rainfall and swollen rivers prompt flooding fears in Kilkenny, with some roads underwater

Freshford councillor Michael McCarthy says he is dreading what may be to come, with more rain forecast

Fresh concerns have been raised over flooding risks in a number of Kilkenny towns, with swollen river levels and overflow onto roads.

In Freshford, the R695 at Mill Bridge was under water last night, while this morning there was still plenty of water on Buncrusha Street. In Kilkenny City, the flood relief scheme was being put to the test with a very high water level in the River Nore, prompting fears for what may lie await further downstream in the likes of Thomastown when the water makes its way there.

More rain is forecast this evening and in the coming days, and local councillor Mick McCarthy says he's dreading what may be to come. Cllr McCarthy will be raising the matter at Monday's meeting of Kilkenny County Council.
