The Lady Desart Bridge in Kilkenny has utilised adaptable LED lighting for a very interesting reason.

It is designed to lessen the impact of late night artificial lighting on the native bat population.

Wink Lighting, who installed the lighting of the bridge, designed and installed a controller to dim the lighting at 12 midnight by 30% and at 2am with a further reduction 20%.

This was done 'with consideration for the bat population' who are sensitive to light while hunting at night.

It also results in a reduction in power consumption and the extended life of each LED light fitting.

It is a great example of how simple urban design quirks can be both greener and less intrusive to native wildlife!
