Cllr David FitzGerald has proposed renaming Kilkenny City Municipal District

A call has been made for Kilkenny City Municipal District to be renamed ‘Kilkenny City Council’.

Cllr David FitzGerald has argued the change would better reflect the city’s rich history and its growing role as a major economic, social and cultural hub.

Previously, Kilkenny City had its own borough council with its own set of powers to manage affairs in the area.

However, that was officially dissolved on June 1, 2014 under the Local Government Act 2014, and replaced by a municipal district format.

In a motion penned for the next meeting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District, Cllr FitzGerald proposed, “That Kilkenny Municipal District be renamed “Kilkenny City Council” to reflect the ancient history of the City and the expansion of the Kilkenny City urban area as a leading national economic, social and cultural hub.”

The motion will be discussed at next Friday’s meeting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District.
