The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI) ‘Beat CF in the South-East’ have launched a fundraising drive to raise over a quarter of a million euro for the refurbishment of 4 rooms in Waterford Regional Hospital (WRH) .The rooms will provide life changing care for children with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) who avail of the facility.
Martin Cahill, Fundraising Manager of CFAI stated “This will be a huge step forward in the treatment of CF children and the knock on effect into adulthood can’t be under estimated. By next July we need to raise €250,000 of the overall €350,000 which is needed to provide these life changing services, all the stops are being pulled out to do it”
The project aims to covert these 4 rooms into state of the art isolation en-suite facilities, primarily for the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis paediatrics at the hospital. The necessity for such facilities arises from the high risk of cross-infection for CF patients from hospital superbugs and other airborne bacteria in the hospital environment. The facilities will be built with infection control firmly in mind and the rooms will include a special air recovery system to keep the air clean and infection free.
“This project is for all of the South East Region, we have children that come from Clonmel, Tipperary, Wexford, Kilkenny and as far up as Carlow, as well as Waterford. The rooms when not in use by CF patients will be available to other children on the ward. ” said Cystic Fibrosis Clinical Nurse Specialist Ann Doyle at WRH
The launch of ‘Beat CF in the South East’ took place on Monday last Dooley’s Hotel, Waterford, with much support from local friends and well known faces. Walter Walsh, Kilkenny All-Ireland Hurling Medal winner in 2012 showed his support for the fundraising campaign “I have been aware of CF for a long time as a friend of my family has the illness, I am delighted to support the cause”
CFAI are asking the public to get behind this project and help ‘Beat CF in the South - East’ by organising local community fundraising events. For more information on the campaign or to donate please visit www.cfireland.ie, please specify that your donation is for the Waterford project.
