Nobody had anticipated that sitting councillor, Pat Millea, Tullaroan would fail to get the Fianna Fail party nomination at the north Kilkenny selection convention in Ballyragget last night.
Former councillor and community activist, Pat Fitzpatrick, Ballyfoyle and GAA stalwart Mick McCarthy upstaged the other candidates by heading the poll and ensuring their place on the Fianna Fail ticket on May 23.
When selection convention chairman, Niall Collins TD opened the meeting at the CYMS hall in the town, he explained that headquarters had decided that only two people were to be selected in the six seat electoral area that takes in Ballyragget, Castlecomer and Urlingford.
The other candidates to lose out were: Jimmy Brennan, Johnstown; Maria Keating-Fenlon, Goresbridge and Joe Brennan, Kilmanagh.
There is a possibility that Fianna Fail HQ might add a third candidate, so there is still hope for Cllr Millea.
