Water is an election issue - Funchion

Sinn Féin General Election candidate Cllr Kathleen Funchion has dismissed the claims by the government that Water Charges is no longer an issue in the lead-up to General Election.

"I found it incredible that Alan Kelly would attempt to spin people into believing that the issue of the water charges had simply vanished. Nothing could be further from the truth. I can assure the Minister, and Government TDs for this constituency, that Water Charges and the debacle of Irish Water are firmly on the General Election agenda here in Carlow/Kilkenny. Out on the canvass trail, it is coming up on the doors all the time.

"The imposition of Water Charges is one of the most deeply unfair actions taken by the Fine Gael and Labour Party government,” she said.

“Instead of heeding the opposition of the overwhelming majority of the public, voiced at numerous demonstrations over the last two years, the government attempted to bribe people with sweeteners such as the conservation grant and payment caps. It hasn't worked.

"There are many families for whom paying water charges would mean the electricity bill going unpaid or not having enough money for a proper groceries shop. Fine Gael and the Labour Party think that public anger over water charges has gone away, it hasn't, she said.
