Kilkenny centenarian celebrates her big birthday in style

Hard work and no drink is the key to a long and healthy life according to Kilkenny centenarian, Frances McDonagh.

The 100-year-old celebrated her birthday on Thursday surrounding by family and friends at St John's Parish Centre.

Later today loved ones will travel from all over the country to mark this very special occasion at The Springhill Hotel.

Frances was born in Thomastown and lived for most of her adult life in Gowran where she married George Hamilton McDonagh. She moved to Leggettsrath in 1990 where she now lives with her children Tony and Tricia.

"I never smoked or drank and I worked hard - that is the key," she said adding that she still remembers the day the electricity came to Gowran. "The whole place lit up, there was great excitement," she added.
