Minister John Paul Phelan
Castlecomer Community College’s bid to finish the school’s new sports complex has been given a significant boost with confirmation from Minister of State, John Paul Phelan, TD, that it is to get over €90,000 in grant aid.
The €90,500 cash injection has been welcomed locally by Fine Gael councillor, John Brennan, who said it will be a massive boost to the school and to the wider community.
“This is fantastic news and will allow the hall to be completed. The school and wider community has a fantastic sporting tradition and this will ensure that endures,” Cllr Brennan added.
Minister Phelan commended the College in its successful appeal for assistance under the Sports Capital Grants programme, funding. “I am delighted to see this much needed funding going to Castlecomer. It will really make a big difference not just to the school but to clubs and associations in the area.
“The Sports Capital Programme was re-instated by the last Fine Gael government in 2012, after it had been cut by Fianna Fáil in the wake of the economic crash. It represents an excellent value for money investment. It is crucial we invest in sport and the health of our population, particularly with obesity on the rise.
“Investing in sport is good for the health of the nation, both literally and economically. And with PE about to become a Leaving Certificate subject, this grant aid ensures that Castlecomer are ahead of the game,” Minister Phelan concluded.
